Mother-of-five benefits fraud

An Ilkeston mother-of-five must pay back more than £5,000 of fraudulently received benefits after claiming to be a lone parent.

A tip-off led Erewash Borough Council fraud investigators to find that 25-year-old Leanne Beech, also known as Leanne Woodward, was actually living with a David Clay at her Thistle Road home in Hallam Fields.

At the time of the tip-off, Beech had three children and was expecting her fourth.

She was pregnant with her fifth child when the matter reached court.

Beech denied at several hearings, including at a full hearing on Monday October 15 at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court, that Mr Clay was a resident.

She was found guilty by magistrates and must now repay the overpayments of £4,246.11 of income support, £883.11 in housing benefit and £18.28 of council tax.

On Friday October 19 at the same court, she was sentenced to a six month community order with six months supervision.

She was also ordered to pay £200 costs for the false claims between March 2010 and May 2011.
