Derby Crown Court heard on Wednesday, April 9, how Samuel Mason, 19, of Crossings Avenue, Chapel-en-le-Frith, was sentenced to six months in a young offenders’ institution and disqualified from driving for 18 months.

The accident happened on May 2 when Mason was driving a black Toyota along the A6013 towards Ladybower Reservoir and collided with cyclist John Parkin.

Mr Parkin’s wife Karen stated: “I want the accused to know what they have taken from us. They will never get our forgiveness.”

The court heard how Mason pulled out round a parked van on the left-hand side of the road and turned right onto Brentwood Road colliding with 42 year-old Mr Parkin who was travelling down the hill in the opposite direction.

Mason told police he did not see Mr Parkin, of Sheffield, but witnesses described Mason as looking impatient and a motorist said she had seen Mr Parkin.

Mason pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving.

Adam Watkins, defending, said Mason either underestimated the speed Mr Parkin was approaching or did not see him.

Mason had been driving for just 15 months.

Judge John Pini QC criticised Mason for not expressing remorse in a pre-sentence report. He told him: “I do not regard this as momentary inattention, nearer to reckless risk-taking. Mr Parkin was visible for 57 metres. Your miscalculation cost him his life.”
