POLICE are urging drivers to make sure number plates are secured after a rise in thefts.
Between April 2010 and March 2011 there were 245 number plate thefts in the Derby division, which includes Erewash, compared to 182 the previous year.
Police will now be fitting free clutch screws, which make it ‘virtually impossible’ to remove them without shattering the plate. The next session will be at Kingsway Retail Park, Derby, on Friday.
Det Sgt Kam Sanghera said: “There is no definitive answer as to why the number has increased but we believe that many stolen plates end up being used in crime such as theft of fuel from petrol stations or burglaries.”
