A DEDICATED police team has been formed to tackle serious sexual and physical assaults in the south of the county.
Operation Diamond is made up of 15 detectives and will investigate the crimes in Erewash, Derby, and South Derbyshire.
DCI Sam Slack, leading the team, said it will ‘greatly improve’ the way they are investigated, bringing more criminals to justice and providing better support for victims.
He said: “Although these types of offence only make up two per cent of all crime in Derby, South Derbyshire and Erewash, they have a significant impact on victims.
“We believe that Operation Diamond will allow us to provide a better response to these crimes and give a better service to victims. Only a handful of other forces in the UK have dedicated teams such as this and I’m pleased that Derbyshire police have decided to take this step.”
