The number of registered sex offenders in Derbyshire has increased by 69 to 977 in the last year.

A further 284 people who have committed serious crimes including robbery and wounding have been identified as being particularly dangerous.

The details are revealed in a report published by Derbyshire police today.

Derbyshire Constabulary assistant chief constable Martyn Bates said: “Safeguarding the public from violent and sexual crime continues to be one of the highest priorities for agencies across Derbyshire.

“The crimes these offenders are responsible for greatly affect the lives of victims, their friends and families and can in turn cause fear in local communities.

“We recognise the public’s concern about people who may present a risk of causing significant harm.

“We take a tough approach to any increased risk offenders may present, while working hard to rehabilitate them.”
