Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Monday, April 7, how Jade Bown, 24, of New Street, Grassmoor, Chesterfield, was spotted stealing steaks from the Midland Co-op, at North Wingfield.

Prosecuting solicitor John Cooper said: “The manager was watching CCTV on a separate theft from before when he noticed this female and felt she was going to steal so she was monitored and she stole a handful of steaks.

“The manager got staff to prevent her leaving and he saw her take the steaks and throw them behind a storage space. The manager brought her into the warehouse and the steaks were recovered.”

Mr Cooper said the theft was made at the point she took the steaks without any intention to pay for them and she admitted she had no intention to pay and knew she had committed an offence.

Bown pleaded guilty to theft after the incident in December.

John Wilford, defending, said Bown was on benefits and despite her previous convictions, which include shoplifting offences, this was an isolated case. He added that Bown was not willing to co-operate with the probation service so certain alternatives to custody could not be considered. Magistrates stated because of Bown’s previous offending and non-compliance with probation orders and non-compliance with a proposed probation report, they had no choice but to impose a four week custodial sentence.
