MASKED robbers smashed their way into an Ilkeston building society using sledge hammers to steal cash boxes on Monday night.
Terrified security guards making a cash delivery at Nationwide in Bath Street were confronted by four men smashing their way through the front doors at about 8.50pm.
They threatened the guards with the hammers before making off in a hatchback car with what police say was a ‘significant sum of cash’ in four cash boxes.
As they made their escape they dropped one of the boxes in the street.
Shoppers were shocked to see police carry a sledge hammer in an evidence bag out of the branch at about 1pm on Tuesday.
The force has since released a picture of the weapon in a bid to track down those responsible.
No one was injured but the store was closed on Tuesday. A spokesman for Nationwide confirmed that the incident took place but would not comment any further.
Police are appealing for information from anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area in the lead up to the incident.
Witnesses can call Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
n Two men from Derby have been arrested in connection with the robbery. A 26-year-old and a 24-year-old were both being quizzed by police when the Advertiser went to press.
