A 26-YEAR-OLD who assaulted a police officer in Kirk Hallam has been handed a suspended jail term and put on a supervision programme.
Liam Meenam, who lives in Victoria Street, Eastwood, hid in a garden after running off from the taxi in St Norbert’s Drive in September. He then pushed a police officer to the ground when he was challenged, leaving her with a badly injured knee. He was eventually found when police scrambled the force helicopter.
Meenam, who battles with drink and drugs, was charged with assaulting a police officer and making off without payment.
He initially pleaded not guilty to the first charge and guilty to the second and was due to stand trial on Monday, but changed his plea to guilty at the last minute. He was sentenced by Derby magistrates on Tuesday morning.
The court heard he had eight previous convictions for 11 offences, the last one being three years ago.
