Councillors are set to honour cycling coach Dave Brailsford this week with the Freedom of the Borough.

Leader of Erewash Borough Council Cllr Chris Corbett will offer up a motion that the authority recognises ‘his inspirational achievements and dedication to the sport of Cycling as performance director of British Cycling’ at an extraordinary council meeting tonight (Thursday).

It was revealed during the Olympic Games this summer that Mr Brailsford, who lives in Ilkeston, was to receive the honour, which is very rarely handed out.

The honour is for his achievement with the Team GB cycling team this year and for his success at the 2004 Athens games, the 2008 Beijing gmes and ‘the awe-inspiring victory in the Tour de France with Team Sky’.

The motion, which is to be seconded by Cllr Louis Booth is ahead of the full council meeting at 7pm at Long Eaton Town Hall.

The honour is a ceremonial title which does not afford Dave any special privileges,
