Deep-sea diver Mayor receives his chains

TRIBUTES were paid to the outgoing Mayor after he passed the civic chains on to new Mayor Cllr Kevin MIller last Thursday.

Conservative Cllr Miller, who represents the Derby Road West ward in Long Eaton, said Cllr Robert Parkinson, who celebrated his 75th? birthday on the day, had been an ‘exemplary’ Mayor.

Cllr Miller, who was first elected to Erewash Borough Council in 1987, will be supporting Armed Services Cadet Corps, including the borough’s Sea, Army and Air Force Cadets and the Sandiacre Canal Trust, during his civic year.

Skilled deep-sea diver and former firefighter Cllr Miller said: “I will do my utmost to ensure the smooth running of the role. I know I can count on my team.”

Paying tribute to Breaston Cllr Parkinson, who was named Father of the Borough, Cllr Margaret Orchard said he was now the longest serving councillor having been a member since the borough’s inception in 1974. He said he had had a ‘most memorable and enjoyable year’.
