Dog cruelty couple get life ban and fine
A family has been banned from keeping animals for life after neglecting its pet dog.
Husband and wife Kadaline Tomlinson, 51, Thomas Tomlinson, 55 and their son Adam, 20, of Barker Avenue North, were also ordered to pay 800 each in court costs and were made the subject of a curfew for four months at Derby Magistrates' Court.
The court was told the case was "the very worst sort of gross neglect".
West Highland terrier Scotty was found straying and was picked up by an Erewash Borough Council dog warden.
They alerted the RSPCA because of the animal's condition. The owners were traced because Scotty was microchipped and registered to the Tomlinsons.
The five-year-old was suffering from a severe skin condition which caused bleeding, scabs and cracks across his whole body.
The animal's skin was so damaged it needed strong pain relief just to be touched. Fur was missing from most of his body.
An untreated eye infection meant the dog could not see and his nails were so long they had curled up into the pads of his feet. In mitigation, the family said they were extremely sorry they had not helped Scotty beforehand.
RSPCA inspector Dave Johnson-Hill said: "There can be no excuse for allowing your pet to suffer to the extent that Scotty was.
"His family had turned a blind eye to his plight, letting him endure worse and worse pain without helping him in any way."
The vet who examined Scotty said the dog had been made to suffer for at least three months.
He is now being looked after by the RSPCA and will be rehomed with new owners when he is well enough.
