£6.5m sports plan for college
Broomfield College, Morley, planned sports hall
A MORLEY-BASED college is hoping the council will grant it permission to build a £6.5m sports hall, playing fields and reception, for use by students and neighbours.
Broomfield Hall – part of Derby College, which also has campuses in Ilkeston, Heanor and Derby – has received £2m from the Government towards the project.
The rest of the cash will be found by the college.
Having submitted a planning application this week, it is now up to Erewash Borough Council to decide whether the development can go ahead.
College corporate director Nigel Gell said: “We have been concentrating our efforts on Broomfield Hall which has seen dramatic growth in terms of numbers on our land-based courses.

“The planned improvements in our next phase will provide a sports hall and fitness suite with three new playing fields alongside which will benefit our own students and of course the local community in the Erewash area.”
The new reception area will include a library and resource centre, classrooms and other student services including a food court.
The work is part of a wider development programme which has already seen the construction of a multi-million pound improvement programme at the Morley campus with a new day nursery, food hub, classroom, indoor horseriding arena and a widened driveway.
Mr Gell said that future plans include refurbishing the animal care facilities and creating new glasshouses to support horticulture courses alongside further investigations on the best way forward for improving facilities for students at the Field Road campus in Ilkeston.
