JUNIOR school pupils are celebrating being crowned the sporting champions of Ilkeston after coming out on top in an athletics competition this week.

The year three and four team from Granby Junior School in Heanor Road took part in the Ilkeston primary schools athletics event, organised by Erewash Sports Partnership, against eight other schools from the town.

Led by teacher Deborah Hurst, they were crowned overall winners after competing in a mini Olympics-style competition consisting of running, jumping and throwing events at Rutland Sports Park.

Teacher Ian Bond said: “We are very please with their efforts.

“It’s a good activity because it gives them all-round skills in a wide range of events.”
