THE MAYOR of Erewash greeted children from a Long Eaton primary school at the town hall last week to teach them about local politics.

Longmoor Primary School is about to hold school elections and as voting time looms, the budding politicians have been picking up tips.

Cllr Kevin Miller, whose granddaughter Emily Burton, 10, goes to the school, showed them around Erewash Borough Council’s chambers and handed around his chains and mace.

Year three pupil Amelia Turner even got dressed up as the civic head of the borough.

Deputy headteacher Carol Lacey said: “It was very good and we learnt a lot.”

The pupils also had a visit from Erewash MP Jessica Lee on Friday, who told them, all about national politics and promised them a visit to Westminster next year.

Mrs Lacey added: “It’s all been great preparation for the school elections and the pupils can’t wait for their trip to London.”
