Parents in Cotmanhay have been thrown a lifeline after it’s been agreed that a nursery set for closure will stay open until the end of October.
Derbyshire County Council have come to an agreement with the Pre School Learning Alliance who run the nursery at the Children’s Centre Centre on Beauvale Drive to try and find a better outcome for parents and children.
The nursery was set to close on August 31 after the charity branded it ‘unsustainable.’
Elizabeth Law’s daughter has been at the nursery since April when she returned to work as a community carer.
She said: “We are thrilled but we have to remember that the nursery is still set to close.
“This news is really encouraging and gives us chance to keep our campaign going and collect even more signatures to try and keep the nursery open.
Elizabeth is just one of many mums who contatced the Advertiser saying they would be forced to quit work if the planned closure goes ahead.
She added: “It’s the only affordable child care in Cotmanhay and not just that it’s absolutely brilliant.
“It would be terrible if we lost it.”
A spokesman for Derbyshire County Council said: “We’ve agreed with the Pre School Learning Alliance that the nursery at Cotmanhay Children’s Centre will remain open until 31 October.
“This will give us some time to look at what is needed to meet the needs of local parents and find a solution that is financially viable.”
