A special commemoration event will be held at the historic Stanton Road Cemetery in Ilkeston on Saturday to mark the reinstatement of war grave headstones by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
As well as honouring the war dead who are buried at the cemetery, the event will also mark this year’s centenary of the start of the First World War.
The one-hour commemoration will begin at 2pm and will be hosted by the Friends of Stanton Road Cemetery, who will be joined by the Deputy Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Valerie Custance, and representatives from the Royal British Legion. Councillor Mike Wallis said:“We are grateful to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for reinstating the headstones on the graves of the war dead who are buried at the ceremony and this event will enable us to remember them and all who sacrificed their lives in the First World War and, indeed, in all conflicts. “It will be a poignant event and as well as the families of those who buried there, I hope local residents will also join us for this one hour commemoration.”
