Farewell to a top cricketer

Madam, Ilkeston lost one of its great cricketing characters of the 1950s and 60s last week, Butch Castle.

I can see him now, all 5ft 4inches of him, tearing in off his 25-yard run, grinning away, hair all over the place, fag in one hand still lit, ball in the other.

Butch sort of scuttled in, but if a batsman had a high back lift your pegs were demolished before you could move.

He was a very underrated fast bowler, with a heart as big as they come.

I think all local cricketers of that era would like to say cheerio to Butch – they don't make them like him anymore.
