On behalf of the members and officers of Erewash Borough Council, the Mayoress and I offer sincere greetings to all our residents and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
It is a privilege to serve as Mayor of our borough.
Since last May, the Mayoress Jill and I have met hundreds of people who visit, work, or live in Erewash.
We have been immensely impressed by the wealth of talent amongst our people of all ages: from young people in theatre, music and arts organisations to those citizens involved in welfare work.
We have seen at first hand the service given to the community by armies of volunteers; ranging from the League of Friends of Ilkeston Hospital, the Royal British Legion to the Rotary and Lions Clubs, Local History Groups, Cadet Force Units, those involved in Guiding and Scouting movements and the groups in every church in the borough who do so much good within their communities.
Then there are our arts and environmental groups, those who support people with disabilities and all who work in or for our schools. I cannot list all by name!
Their work goes on daily, giving direct help to neighbours or raising funds for charities.
It is your collective contribution that makes Erewash such a wonderful community and I would like to thank every one of those people who give their time and energy to make life better for others.
Some people will not be with their loved ones this Christmas and to them we send our special good wishes.
We particularly think of those serving in the armed forces across the world and their families here at home, especially those who serve with the local Regiment, the Mercians.
We remember with particular gratitude those who have given their lives in the service of their Queen and country and the families they have left behind.
Special thanks are due to all those people who will be working over the Christmas period in the emergency services, hospitals, power stations and all other essential services.
Your invaluable efforts are much appreciated.
I invite you to join us at the Christmas Carol Service which is again being held on Ilkeston Market Place on Christmas Eve from 7pm.
It will be a great time to celebrate this time of year together.
A collection will be held in aid of my charities for this year: The Sandiacre and Derby Canal Trust and the Cadet Units within the borough.
These worthy charities do invaluable work and I do hope you will be able to support them.
I hope we all have a Christmas that is safe, warm and comfortable. Take care if you are travelling and I hope you enjoy spending time with family and friends.
Our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.
Cllr Kevin Miller
Mayor of Erewash
