Firefighters tackle blaze at Ilkeston industrial site
FIREFIGHTERS spent over four hours tackling a blaze at an Ilkeston industrial estate on Friday.
Police and the fire service put up a cordon and evacuated the area surrounding Roger's Yard, on Crompton Road, Ilkeston, because the flames were corrosive.
Fire crews were called to the scene just after 9am where drums of scrap metal, including titanium shavings, were alight.
Firefighters used breathing apparatus and wore liquid splash suits while they put out the toxic flames.
Dry kiln sand from a nearby block paving firm was used to put the fire out.
Incident commander Gary Platts said: "This could have been much worse, we were lucky the block paving firm had the sand we needed.
"Because of the way some metals burn water can't be used to put them out."
