Flying the flag high

More than 40,000 brave merchant seamen who died in the Second World War were remembered at a ceremony in Ilkeston Market Place.

Ilkeston councillor David Stephenson laid a wreath at the war memorial, while the ‘red duster’ flag was raised at the Town Hall to commemorate national Merchant Navy Day.

Members of Ilkeston British Legion raised standards at the ceremony.

Mayor Cllr Jennifer Hulls, who took part in a similar ceremony in Long Eaton, said she was proud that Erewash’s two town halls were flying the flags.

“It is important to honour the role played by merchant seafarers during the Second World War, many of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice,” she said.
