A huge building fire at the former Stanton Ironworks was tackled by 40 firefighters yesterday (Monday).

The blaze off Low’s Lane was reported by several members of the public at about 6.10pm.

Initially, two appliances from Long Eaton and Ilkeston were dispatched but after establishing the extent of the blaze more fire engines were sent to the site.

Another appliance arrived from Ilkeston, along with others from Heanor, Kingsway and Ascot Drive in Derby, and Stapleford.

An aerial ladder was also used to tackle the blaze and the major incident unit was sent to the scene.

It was unknown this morning who owns the building at the centre of the incident.

Last year a fire burned for weeks at Arcwood Recycling close to the site.

An investigation is due to start this morning to try to determine the cause of the blaze.
