A Ilkeston man has raised more than £1,500 for charity after taking part in a Barmy to Barcelona rally.

Andy Page, of Shipley View, and colleague Mick Chikhlia , from North London, successfully completed a 1,500 mile drive from Lille to Barcelona in the Wacky Rally.

The challenge saw the duo drive through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, to arrive in Barcelona four days later.

Guidelines of the event stated that the car could cost no more than £300, and competitors had to decorate their vehicle and themselves in their own chosen theme.

The duo undertook the challenge in a 2002 Ford Puma, which was donated by local car dealership T.C.Harrison and dressed up in a black and red crash test dummy theme.

Andy said: “It was an amazing experience. We saw some gorgeous scenery and the mountain passes were brilliant to drive through, even when there were no barriers between us and the bottom.”

Andy, 50, added: “We are so proud of the amount we have raised. We really appreciate every pound that people have donated.”

All money raised will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.
