Get involved in fight for services

Sir,

Do the residents of Ilkeston know that our county council are going to close all the youth centres that it runs in Derbyshire, including our Cantelupe Youth Centre in the Market Place in Ilkeston?

The Advertiser’s front page story last week ‘Save Our Youth Centre’ about the youth club that runs at the Cantelupe Centre on the market place in Ilkeston showed that the news is gradually filtering out to ordinary people and causing alot of upset and worry.

Please can Conservative councillors who are in charge of this plan to axe all of the Youth Centres in Derbyshire including our wonderful club at the Cantelupe come down and face the young people and the people with learning disabilities who use the club and explain to them what is going on.

They don’t know anything about the ‘consultation’ that is taking place now until the middle of March.

It is not fair to expect them to know there is a questionnaire to fill out online on the council website. Where can they get a paper copy?

I went into the Ilkeston Library and they did not know anything about it and had no copies to give me.

I found out by chance last week that there is a Facebook group now about saving the Cantelupe called Help Save Our Youth Club (Cantelupe, Ilkeston) from being closed down and also a petition started by a young girl in Derbyshire which has already been signed by nearly 1,500 people online on the council website.

Please can you tell these young people what is going on and why you are axing the Youth Service in Derbyshire. They are very, very worried.
