A petition has this week been submitted to Erewash Borough Council calling for a roundabout in Ilkeston to be renamed Gnome Island.

The roundabout in Nottingham Road has attracted attention for a number of months after the miniature figures started appearing on the island. Resident Pamela Lambert admitted to being the person who put them there and spoke of her anger that someone kept stealing the little fellas.

Since then other people have started putting gnomes on the island, only for them to be stolen almost immediately.

The online petition ,which ended on Tuesday, was signed by more than 500 people in Ilkeston. It would need thousands of signatures for the council to consider it. However the council has said it will look into it.

It is not known who started the petition but a character called the Ilson Gnome has been created, cropping up on various social media sites.

There are currently no gnomes on the island at the moment.

Will the roundabout be renamed Gnome Island in the future?
