A young female golfer who plays for an Ilkeston club has been selected to go forward and train with a national team.

Olivia Kelly, 17, who plays at Erewash Valley Golf Club, has been chosen to join the Welsh Golfing Union ladies national training squad for 2015/16.

The student, who is a member of the Performance Golf Academy programme run in partnership with Derby College, will join the eight-strong national squad on their winter training programme this month.

The programme commences at Conwy Golf Club for a two-day training camp and will see the squad also travel overseas later in October to a warm weather training camp in Portugal.

Olivia gained selection to the squad following a series of successful performances during 2015, the highlight being a solid sixth-place finish in the Welsh Ladies Strokeplay Championships played at Vale of Llangollen in May.

Olivia gained her first international call-up during 2015, playing in the girls’ home internationals at Lanark Golf Club, Scotland, in August, where she won two of her matches against England and Scotland.

Olivia will now aim to work hard on her game this winter and look to gain a full Welsh ladies cap during 2016.

She said: “I am honoured to have been selected as a member of the Welsh ladies national squad.

“It has been an ambition of mine to represent the UK. Playing in the girls’ home internationals was a fantastic experience which I wish to be part of again in the future.

“I look forward to the winter training programme and getting ready for the 2016 season.

“I will be working hard on planning my schedule to target the main events I wish to perform well in during
2016.”

Performance Golf Academy programme director Nigel Furniss said: “We worked hard with Olivia during 2014/15, setting out her training and competition programme to deliver her aim of gaining selection to Welsh national team.

“We will revisit Olivia’s goals with her again and set the programme of training and completion for the next 12 months.

“Olivia has demonstrated a strong work ethic which has resulted in her achieving her goals.

“We all wish to congratulate Olivia on her selection and will strive to help her represent the Welsh ladies team during 2016.”
