Head teacher speaks out against plans

A Long Eaton head teacher fears that independent schools will be pressured into becoming more like maintained schools if government plans go ahead.

Keith Morrow, head at The Elms Junior School and Nursery, is against plans to replace the existing fee-paying schools’ standards body with Ofsted-style inspections.

Mr Morrow feels that the very essence of independent education would be under severe threat if the government changes the current inspection framework of the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) and brings it into line with that used by Ofsted.

He said: “I have some major concerns about handing over the inspection of independent schools to a government body.

“My fear is that in order to get a good Ofsted report, independent schools would be pressured into becoming more like maintained schools.

“This would include re-introducing SATS and narrowing the curriculum to focus on maths and English almost exclusively at primary level.”
