Headstones to be re-instated

The headstones of Ilkeston soldiers originally buried at Stanton Road Cemetary could be re-instated.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is looking for relatives of five soldiers buried at the cemetery.

The gravestones were removed after the Ilkeston cemetery where they were buried fell into disrepair and were re-commemorated at Park Cemetery, Ilkeston, in 1974.

Friends of Stanton Road Cemetery completely repaired the site in 2000.

The commission wishes to talk to relatives and next of kin of Gunner Albert Alam, Private S Bonser, Private W Clewes and Private P Harrison, who all served in World War One, and Gunner Patrick Molony who served in World War Two.

If enough information can be retrieved the commission will be able to reinstate the headstones at Stanton Road. The great-grandson of one of the soldiers has already come forward.

Following a review the commission now wants to put new headstones for the soldiers at their original burial plots.
