Hundreds sign up to be Special Constables

DERBYSHIRE police have taken have handed out 450 application packs to people wanting to become volunteer officers since September.

Sixteen new recruits were sworn in earlier this month, 22 are currently being trained, 40 are due to start their training in May and more applicants are in the initial assessment stage.

Assistant Chief Constable Dee Collins said: “We are pleased that so many people have decided to join the Special Constabulary and I hope we receive more.

“Specials work alongside regular officers and play an important part in keeping neighbourhoods safe.

“Being a special is an exciting, varied and rewarding role and we are always actively recruiting for new people to join.”
