Three generations of an Ilkeston family proved that girls of all ages can enjoy sport together when they took part in the UK’s biggest ever women-only try-dive.
Grandmother Margaret Weightman, her daughter, Sarah Webster and granddaughter, Abby Webster were among 54 women and girls who tackled their first ever scuba dive or snorkel at the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) event.
The unique women only try-dive was organised at Londsdale Pool in Mickleover, Derbyby BSAC’s East Midlands regional team, in partnership with Sport England’s inspirational This Girl Can Campaign.
Retired Margaret from Ilkeston, had gone along to watch her daughter and granddaughter, but on arrival decided to take the plunge herself.
She said: “The fact it was women only gave me a lot more confidence and I really enjoyed it.”
Sarah Webster, said: “The whole event was so well organised and the fact it was women only gave me confidence.”
Abby, 13, said: “It was fantastic and I really enjoyed it. Being underwater is really amazing and everything looks so clear through a mask.”
