60 jobs target smashed with months to go

A plan to see 60 jobs offered up to young people in the Ilkeston area this year has smashed its target before the first month is over.

The first ever Opportunities for Erewash has been hailed a great success by organisers who hoped to achieve 60 jobs pledges by the end of this Diamond Jubilee year.

But in the last week alone, a total of 67 pledges were received, 50 of which were from one firm –Your Bus, Heanor, which wants young bus drivers.

During a month of jobs fairs and talks aimed at 18 to 24-year-olds in the borough, organisers, Erewash Local Strategic Partnership has been asking local companies to offer jobs, training and apprenticeships.

Chair of the partnership Cllr Carol Hart said it was ‘excellent news’.

“There is also a real feelgood factor surrounding Opportunities for Erewash, which generated a lot of interest among young people and we are delighted that so many grasped the chance to gain free training and attend the free information events on offer,” she said.

Alongside the 50 driver jobs, six roles were offered by Ilkeston’s Derwent Analytics, three kitchen and bar jobs by the Newdigate Arms in West Hallam, two jobs at Domino’s Pizza, and three apprenticeships via JHP Training, based in Borrowash and Castle Donington.
