A winter wonderland

THESE snowy snapshots sent in by Advertiser readers show Ilkeston after Saturday night’s winter showers.

Temperatures dropped and flakes started to fall on Saturday afternoon and by the early evening roads, pavements and treetops were covered in snow.

Motorists were left wondering why the roads hadn’t been gritted after the conditions led to police closing Chalons Way after deeming it impassable.

But a spokesman for Derbyshire County Council said: “We gritted Chalons Way five times on Saturday – at 1pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm, 7.30pm and 10pm. We also ploughed it around 1am Sunday morning.

“We do our best to keep roads clear during severe weather but we experienced heavy snowfall for around eight hours on Saturday.

“Very few roads had to be closed, one of them being Chalons Way that was closed for a short period of time despite us gritting it an hour before it was closed.”

County councillor Michelle Booth also told the Advertiser that she received numerous report from residents of people stealing grit from public grit bins.

Residents told Cllr Booth that rather than using the grit provided by the council to clear their streets, people were taking the grit and using it on their driveways leaving streets untreated and drivers unable to use the roads.

Ilkeston Ormiston Academy was shut on Monday but pupils were back in lessons on Tuesday.

I drove down Chalons Way on Saturday evening at 6:30pm and the road didn't look like any grit had been spread, all the cars were travelling at 5-10mph because it was difficult to control the car going down the hill at anything over that speed. Also the roads leading out of Ilkeston were terrible cars were stuck on Quarry Hill Road unable to get up the hills.
