Big improvements at school
Granby Junior School, Heanor Road, Ilkeston.
A junior school has come on leaps and bounds since a poor inspectors’ report four years ago.
Granby Junior School in Heanor Road, which was given a notice to improve in 2009, has achieved a ‘good’ rating in its latest Ofsted inspection – placing it 41st in the country for most improved schools between 2009 and 2012.
It was also the top performing primary school in Ilkeston last year.
Headteacher Brian Allsopp said: “We are pleased with the grading of ‘good’ which is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and pupils.”
The report praised pupils’ reading, saying ‘there is a well-established programme where parents agree to hear their children read at least twice a week.
‘This is proving very effective and many pupils, including the lower attainers, say they really enjoy reading’.
The report also highlighted the ‘positive’ and ‘strong’ relationships between teachers and pupils.
