Big response to town centre appeal
Last week’s front page story asking for your suggestions on how to spend £250,000 on Ilkeston town centre prompted a huge response.
Erewash Borough Council has set aside the quarter of a million specifically to give a boost to our struggling town centre and councillors wanted you to have your say.
Readers flooded in their great ideas to our Facebook page. Here are just a few:
Sam Avon: “All the shop fronts from the top of South Street to the bottom of Bath Street could all do with a lick of paint. A little TLC and they’d all look better.”
Ryan Savage: “We need more big name shops in town, more clothes shops and less charity shops.”
Leon Eighties Radford: “Open up Bath Street to traffic again. With allocated parking bays... If more people could drive INTO Ilkeston, it may encourage more shoppers and therefore entice new business.”
Louise Andrews: “No, traffic up Bath Street would not help at all – there simply wouldn’t be room for everyone walking up and down on small paths, especially on Saturdays...How about getting businesses into all the empty shops by lowering the rents?”
Amanda Collins: “Full time wardens in the town centre and ban swearing...”
Ashley Allen: “Open up a youth media centre.”
Steven Mason: “There needs to be something for the younger people, maybe a children’s play centre.”
Sarah Dunn: “Well for starters allow free parking in Ilkeston!
“Why not help local people to showcase themselves? Farmers markets? Craft markets? Or even a few of these ‘pop up’ shops?”
Bradd Farnsworth: “Some more greenery in town is needed too. Let’s restore some of the flower beds to their former glory and get some hanging baskets.
“I realise the Mid Summer Happening has traditionally been on Victoria Park, but perhaps shifting it to the Market Place might encourage more people to drop by?”
Sam Thomson: “Indoor market, cheap stalls...Bigger play area, less takeaways and less charity shops.”
Angie Chester: “Albion centre would make a great ice rink.”
