A popular and well-established Ilkeston cafe is on the market while its owner looks to take on a new challenge.

After more than eight years at the Rutland Cafe in Granby Street, Gordon Pringle told the ‘Tiser he plans to hang up his apron – but only if a buyer comes along.

Gordon joked: “I turned 50 last week so you might say it’s a bit of a mid-life crisis – but instead of a sports car, I want to buy another business.”

“I have had great fun here and I have now got customers that have become friends,” he added.

The Rutland Cafe opened in 1987 and since then has only had four owners, including Gordon, which he said proves the cafe is a popular eatery that is going nowhere.

“If the right buyer comes along I’ll consider moving on,” he said, “But if not we are staying put.”

Alongside a roaring passing trade, ranging from van drivers to trade delegations, Gordon and his wife Carol also offer outside catering for events, including weddings and funerals and say they have a loyal customer base.

The kitchen, which serves up breakfasts, lunches and sandwiches, was completely refurbished last year with all modern fittings.

Anyone who is interested in taking on the cafe, which could be extended to an upper floor, should contact Gordon on 07791742629.
