Charitable piano player dies at 101

A 101-year-old, who helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity, has died.

Grace Gooding, an accomplished pianist right up to her 100th birthday, passed away peacefully on Friday January 4 at the Grange care home in Risley, where she lived, her family has said.

Grace founded the local branch of the Guide Dogs for the Blind charity and daughter Pamela Stevenson said that her mum was an ‘expert’ at fundraising.

She raised thousands for local branches of the Red Cross and British Heart Foundation and the Inner Wheel club.

At her 100th birthday in 2011, Grace received a telegram from the Queen and played the piano for her family and fellow care home residents.

Grace was born in 1911 at Sawley and the family moved to West Bridgford, where she helped in her father’s ladies outfitters firm.

In 1937 she married well-known estate agent Charles Gooding and moved to Ilkeston. They had three children, Pamela, Rex and Roger.

Grace also leaves six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
