Charity’s £245,000 hope
Chief executive of Community Concern Erewash Bren Davies and staff and volunteers have their fingers crossed for Big Lottery funding.
The future of vital work for some of Erewash’s most vulnerable residents hangs on whether a Cotmanhay charity wins a £245,000 grant.
More than 1,000 borough residents are helped every year by Community Concern Erewash, and it needs the cash to fund its home comforts team for another five years.
The team carries out work at the homes of vulnerable and elderly residents, such as Margaret Stocks, 83, who has used the service for more than eight years at her Cotmanhay home.
The team has decorated her bungalow throughout and tended her garden and lawn every three weeks. She has also used the Bright Street Laundry service and the team helped her deal with documents when her husband Jim died five years ago.
“It’s a godsend,” she said. “The people have been a big help and I would not like them to close down.”
Community Concern Erewash has applied to the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund for the cash, which only covers two thirds of the running costs. The rest will have to be covered by other grants.
Chief executive Bren Davies said: “If we are not successful with this application we are concerned about the future of our home comforts team and the people who need this service will lose out.”
