The ‘iconic’ entrance to a village churchyard has been repaired as part of a £2,600 restoration project.

The two war memorials – commemorating Cossall’s First World War dead and three soldiers who fought at the Battle of Waterloo – have been cleaned up too.

Cllr Ken Rigby, who represents the village on Nottinghamshire County Council, supported St Catherine’s Church’s bid for the cash.

“The tiles on the lychgate needed urgent work so they’ve been replaced and the memorial was also in need of a clean-up,” he said.

“The parishioners at the church are delighted with the work that has been so thoughtfully carried out.”

St Catherine’s vicar Rev Andy Lord said: “The lychgate and memorials are iconic landmarks in the village so we are indebted to Cllr Rigby and the county council for their support.”

Surviving memorials to the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, like Cossall’s, are very rare.
