Closing after 35 years

For many, it was the only place to go in Ilkeston to get suited and booted before a special occasion, but after 35 years, Sanders Menswear is closing.

The Bath Street store, which holds fond memories for many townsfolk, is being relocated to Eastwood, where the firm was founded more than 50 years ago.

The closure of Sanders is yet another blow to the bottom end of town, where empty shops are ever-growing.

Manager of the Ilkeston store Andy Hunt, 41, has worked on Bath Street all of his working life, clocking up the last few at the menswear specialists.

“Everything is being transferred to our Eastwood store, which is more or less twice the size of this one,” said Mr Hunt, who also worked at the former Dixons store.

Adding that it will be ‘sad’ to leave Ilkeston and his ‘very loyal customers’, he said: “There are quite a few empty shops on Bath Street but then there are a lot all the way up Bath Street.”

Many of his customers also shop at the Eastwood store, he explained.

He said that the premises have been sold so they will not be empty for long.

Firm owner, Robert Sanders, who is based at the Eastwood store was not available this week to confirm who the buyer was.

The Ilkeston store is currently holding a stock clearance with many items, including shoes, suits and trousers at half price.
