College’s anger over wrong exam results

Trent College’s deputy headteacher has hit out at the government after the Department for Education (DoE) published the wrong figures for the Long Eaton School’s GCSE results.

The DoE wrongly said 35 per cent of students at Trent College achieved five or more A* to C grades including English and maths - the correct figure is 88 per cent.

Its figures were released last month along with the 2012 GCSE results of every school in the county.

The government department will be publishing a corrected table.

Its calculations had been based on an incorrect figure of 211 pupils, which staff at the school believe was reached by adding two year groups together by mistake.

The figures should have been based on 88 students.

Deputy head Peter Kelly said: “We are pleased the department will be publishing a revised table with our corrected GCSE figure for 2012.

“However, is extremely frustrating that this error was able to occur in the first instance and the potential damage the widespread publication of this incorrect figure could do for the excellent academic reputation of Trent College.”

The ‘Tiser revealed last month how less than a quarter of pupils at Ormiston Enterprise Academy gained five good GCSEs – making it the

lowest achieving school in Derbyshire.
