Police in Smalley joined youngsters for a mile-long walk to raise money to help a fellow pupil who is suffering from bone cancer.

Children, teachers and even some parents joined in the walk around the playground in fancy dress at Richardson Endowed Primary School earlier this month

The ‘Mile for Eddy’ is one of the many fundraising events the school has held for their pupil, Eddy Parry, 5.

Eddy, who is from Smalley, was diagnosed with bone cancer last August aged four.

So far around £6,500 has been raised for the Bone Cancer Research Trust through events including a sponsored half-marathon by a team of teachers and parents on Sunday, March 3, at Silverstone.

PCSO Becky Davis and PCSO Vicky Hill from the local Safer Neighbourhood policing team came along to the walk to show their support.

Headteacher Matthew Crawford said: “On the back of the half-marathon we ran that weekend, we wanted to organise something for the children to take part in, so we set up the mile-long walk around the playground. It is 13 laps, and so the laps represent a mile.

“Not only are we raising money for a very worthy cause, but we are also passing on the message to our pupils about how important it is to help and support each other. “

PCSO Davis said: “It is fantastic to see the youngsters and the community coming together to support a local family and fellow pupil through a difficult and challenging time.”

Mr Crawford added: “I would also like to thank Tesco for providing refreshments and to Motifs and UK Exhibition Banners in Ilkeston for the promotional items they have supplied.”

Anyone who would like to donate should visit www.teameddy.co.uk or contact the school.
