Council joins woman’s fight against dog mess

Shipley View pensioner Josephine Mahon is over-the-moon about a new law to keep dogs under control.

Sixty-seven-year-old Jo has been battling against irresponsible dog owners who fail to clean up their mess on pavements around Summerfield Way. d

Under the new Erewash-wide rules, which came into force on March 1, dog owners must pick up their animals’ mess or face £80 fines.

The Dog Control Orders Regulations 2006 also ban dogs from children’s play areas and say they must be on a lead at all times in cemeteries or face the same fine.

Mother-of-one Jo, of Ilford Close, said: “I think this is a great idea. Dogs should be under control especially around children. And if dogs are fouling their owners should be fined.”

Jo’s dog poo woes have now been eased after her campaign was featured in the ‘Tiser last month. A warden now patrols the estate on the lookout for irresponsible owners.

“People are stopping me in the street now and saying ‘well done’,” she said.

“I don’t know why people are so afraid to stand up and be counted.”

Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s member for the environment, said: “The introduction of these dog control orders is a major step in tackling the problem.”

Residents with a dog fouling problem can also contact the council’s street cleaning team by texting 0779 2701 583.
