Council’s plan to replace its refuse lorries

Erewash folk could see a brand new fleet of nine refuse lorries costing more than £1.2m on the streets if a council plan is given the green light.
The proposal is due to go before cabinet members at an executive meeting on January 16.
Council bosses have suggested the plan as the nine refuse collection vehicles which the new RCVs would replace have seen better days and the cost of keeping them roadworthy is likely to become unsustainable.
A report by Erewash’s director of operational services states the nine residual and garden waste lorries cost £135,000 each and would be funded through Erewash’s vehicle and plant renewals reserve.
The nine vehicles are part of a fleet of 15 refuse lorries and the proceeds from the sale of those being replaced would go back into the reserve.
Other options for the members’ consideration are to use the existing fleet and carry out repairs or phase the new fleet in.
