Council to fund 60 places to sit

To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this summer, Erewash Borough Council is to provide 60 new benches across the borough.

Residents will be asked where they would like the benches to be sited.

Leader of the council Cllr Chris Corbett suggested residents might want them to be placed out in the countryside or by bus stops.

“The Conservative group is keen to help everyone celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and these seats will provide a permanent reminder of the Jubilee as well as something that residents can enjoy for many years to come,” he said.

There will also be up to £2,000 released for street parties, under a similar scheme as last year’s Royal wedding.

Cllr Corbett added: “As soon as the budget is approved on March 8, I hope the council will be swamped with requests for help with street parties.”
