Crushing plant noise will be ‘unbelievable’

The noise from a metal crushing plant which could be built on the old Stanton Ironworks will be ‘unbelievable’, according to a neighbouring councillor.
Cllr Ken Rigby said the sound as a four-tonne weight regularly falls from 25 metres to crush metal on the site, off Lows Lane, will be heard across Trowell and the south end of Ilkeston.
“Every day for at least five days a week this plant will create an unbelievable noise,” said Cllr Rigby, who represents Trowell at county, borough and parish levels.
“I am very concerned and so I am fighting very hard against it.”
Ward Recycling, based on Ilkeston’s Quarry Hill Industrial Estate, has applied to Derbyshire County Council to operate the plant.
The firm had been crushing metal there previously but without a licence, prompting the county council’s strategic director of environmental services to object.
Ian Stephenson said in a letter accompanying Ward’s application on the county council website: “This would be an inappropriate activity that will cause both environmental and anti-social impacts on the neighbouring amenity.”
He added that it would be ‘far more suited’ to a more remote location like a quarry.
No one was available from Ward to give a comment this week.
