Dinner dabs for pupils
STUDENTS will scan their fingerprints at the checkout to pay for their school dinner at a secondary school.
Kirk Hallam Community Technology College will install the cashless system this September.
Pupils will scan their thumb print and after their picture is displayed on a screen to confirm their identity, the bill will be debited from their account.
The college is one of the first in the country to have the biomentric reading system installed.
Vice Principle, John Warrington, said it will bring countless benefits.
He said:"The system records what pupils eat so it helps with the healthy eating campaign, and if parents want to know what their kids are eating or how much they are spending they can keep track. Also, it will speed the whole process up which is really beneficial for us. Trying to cater for over 600 students in an hour is difficult. And there won't be any problems with leaving cards or cash at home, or accidentally putting them in the washing machine - you've always got your finger on you haven't you!"
Parents can either send in a cheque to top up their child's account or pupils can deposit cash into allocated machines in the school themselves.
Derbyshire Catering Services are providing cashless systems, such as swipe cards and key fobs, to schools across the county. Benefits include putting a stop to children being bullied for their dinner money.
The system, which will also be introduced in four other Derbyshire schools in Chesterfield, Bolsover, Clowne and New Mills, costs 25,000 to install and will be funded by Derbyshire County Council.
