Anniversary: Iris and Tom Doar celebrate their Diamond wedding anniversary.

Anniversary: Iris and Tom Doar celebrate their Diamond wedding anniversary.

Devoted husband Tom Doar stole wife Iris’ heart by serenading her on Bath street one night when the diamond duo were just teenagers.

And nothing much has changed since then - Tom, 81, gets on his moped seven days a week to spend the day with Iris, 78, at the Ilkeston care home where she now lives after having a severe stroke

The pair celebrate 60 years of marriage today and plan to spend the day together with their two daughters.

On their big day they had a small service at Ilkeston Register Office in front of family followed by tea afterwards at Tom’s parents’ house.

“It was cold day,” said Tom. “It was a nice wedding and party afterwards but we didn’t have a honeymoon - I was only earning £8 per week.”

The Doars lived with Iris’ parents for a year after their wedding then lived in a caravan in Cossall before buying their first house on Mill Street, Ilkeston, and finally settling at Richmond Avenue, Cotmanhay.

Tom and Iris, nee Woolley, both left school aged 14. Mother-of-three Iris worked at various hosieries in the town before becoming a full-time mum.

Motorcycle and model train enthusiast Tom worked in collieries for many years before retiring as rail worker in 1993.

The pair agreed the secret to happy marriage was ‘not to go to bed mad with one another.’
