A Cotmanhay charity has been awarded £75,500 to help older townsfolk sort out their finances.

Community Concern Erewash , which already offers vital services to elderly and vulnerable people across the borough, is using the cash to employ a project co-ordinator to organise workshops for older folk over the next three years.

Chief executive Brenda Davies explained: “We are finding that many of the older people in our community are suffering from a lack of knowledge on financial issues with nowhere to turn to.”

The cash has come from a £2.1m pot shared out by the Lloyds TSB Foundation among organisations which help older people with financial problems and avoid getting into debt and who have no one else to turn to.

The charity, based in Bright Street, is still waiting to hear whether it will receive £245,000 of funding from the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund to continue its home comforts team.

“We need this money to sustain and continue this vital service supporting some of the most vulnerable people in Erewash including residents with age-related conditions and for people suffering from mental health problems, learning difficulties, physical disabilities and isolation,” said Brenda.

The team carries out gardening, painting and decorating, path clearing and other jobs for elderly people across the borough. The charity should find out by the end of this month.
