Explosion at Ilkeston recycling firm

THE cause of an explosion in a metal crushing machine at an Ilkeston recycling firm is still unknown.

Five fire engines and a high rise platform were sent to Ward Recycling on Cromford Road after the explosion led to a fire in a compartment of the machine.

Derbyshire Fire Service said the explosion was thought to have been caused by a drum of flammable substance which had gone into a metal crusher by accident.

Donald Ward, managing director said: "We and the Environment Agency are investigating the cause of the fire.

"It was under control quickly and there wasn't that much damage to the machine."

No one was hurt in last week's incident.
