Four shops are hit during one night

Ilkeston’s Bath Street traders have spoken out after being targeted during a mini crime-spree on Monday night last week.

Four Bath Street shops were targeted during break-ins which cost retailers thousands of pounds in lost stock and damage.

The premises were hit by thieves between 5.30pm on Monday and 8.30am on Tuesday last week. They broke into Chambers Pet Supplies, Gas World, Munchies Takeaway and United Carpets, stealing cash and various stock.

Gavin Chambers, of Chambers Pet Supplies, lost £8,000 worth of stock, including a whole rack of dog collars and leads, five fish and reptile tanks, dog beds, medicines and dog food.

He said: “It’s a killer when you’re a family business - we’re not making much money. People think we’re insured but you only get a small percentage back.

“My worry is that they will come back. To do so many shops in one night without getting caught is just ridiculous.”

Michelle Levers, of Gas World, said: “I’m surprised they’re targeting shops because we all put up signs saying no cash on the premises at night.”

The intruders caused several thousand pounds’ worth of damage to fire surrounds and mirrors while breaking in through the store skylight but only came away with a petty cash tin.

Michelle added: “They obviously chose Monday night because it’s quiet in town and there would not be as much of a police presence.

“It’s just the inconvenience of it and the invasion of privacy and somebody taking your things.”

Erewash councillors have repeated calls for a review of CCTV in Ilkeston in light of the burglary rampage.

A man who was arrested in connection with the four break-ins on Friday has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
