A group of Erewash GPs and clinicians has been given the official go-ahead to take over NHS services in the borough.

Erewash Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is now fully responsible for planning and purchasing health services for 96,000 patients in the area.

The organisation, which came under fire last year for closing one of the two wards at Ilkeston Comunity Hospital, has been running NHS services since early last year.

Group chairman Dr Avi Bhatia said: “We are delighted that NHS Erewash CCG has passed this crucial milestone and achieved the high standards required.

“We can now press ahead with our plans to deliver better care, better health and better value for the people of Erewash.”

CCGs have been set up around the country and in the latest wave of authorisation, just six out of 62 were given the go-ahead by the NHS with no conditions – and three of those, including Erewash, were in Derbyshire.

Chief officer Rakesh Marwaha added: “This is a tremendous achievement”.
